History Shop HLF project update

The History Shop restoration project is now underway. Joint funded by the Trust, the Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project will secure the History Shop’s position as the ‘hub’ venue for heritage provision in the Wigan borough. The listed building will undergo major works on the roof, the exterior, access through the creation of a second staircase and lift, new research gallery and exhibition. The project also aims to enhance access to heritage making the building more welcoming, putting learning at the centre and making it available to a wider and more diverse audience. Emphasis will be placed not only on developing audiences within the refurbished building but also through outreach and digitization of part of the photographic collection.

On the 6th April 2009 the historic building contractors William Anelay & Company moved onto site to begin the refurbishment. The interim service for local and family history continues from Wigan Library and outreach community activity is operational throughout the borough.

Progress will be reported through a variety of means including Web site bulletins, Past Forward and stakeholder meetings.
