In 2012, we are celebrating Greater Manchester produce and producers. Manchester’s very own and co-star of BBC’s Something for the Weekend - Simon Rimmer will be hosting events. Other highlights this year include a demonstration and dinner hosted by celebrity chef - Mr Romantic Jean Christophe Novelli and there will be appearances by local sporting celebrities who will be combining food and sport in this Olympic Year.

Pennington Flash’s Big Bird Watch

Pennington Flash will be hosting a Big Bird Watch this Sunday (29 January) to celebrate the bird life and importance of Pennington Flash and Lightshaw Meadows. Peter Alker from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said "There will be something of interest for everyone from complete beginners to experts and anyone who is simply interested in their local environment and its wildlife. We hope this will bring people flocking to the site to take part in a range of activities on offer and if successful this will become an annual event."

Authors visit new Wigan Library

Three north west authors will be appearing at the new Wigan Life Centre Library in February to mark National Libraries Day. Organiser Carole Ogden from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust said: “These are some of the best writers in the north west so we’re extremely delighted to be hosting such high profile visits.
“This is all about celebrating local talent and inspiring others. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to meet and chat with some of the north west’s finest.”

Let’s Face it together…

The miners strike of 1984 and the legacy of the mining industry is the focus of a new exhibition at the Turnpike Gallery, Leigh.
Face is a specially commissioned documentary, archive and audio-visual exhibition by Paula Keenan, Lesley Sutton and Dave Meehan which opens this weekend.

This year’s annual Holocaust Memorial Day will encourage residents in Wigan and Leigh to “Speak Up and Speak Out” to create a safer and better future!
Wigan and Leigh will unite on Friday 27 January to remember those killed in the Holocaust and other genocides.
